Mrs Audrey Ward

It is with sadness we report the passing of Mrs Audrey Ward aged 86.
Audrey and her husband Cyril came to Scarcroft in the 1970’s, immediately joining in the community spirit of the village, taking part and helping with many activities, a highlight being the celebrations and events that took place in Scarcroft for H M the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977.
On the retirement of Miss Vera Watson, Audrey became Clerk to the Scarcroft Parish Council, a position she held for many years. Apart from the routine of meetings, minutes, preparing agendas, letter writing, delivering flyers, dealing with the City Council etc., a lot of time and effort was spent defending the village green belt and open spaces from the developers. Notable during her time were two major planning applications, one for a large high school and the infamous A58 tip/ golf course, both refused on final appeals, the latter however dragging on for 8 years with many public meetings at the Village Hall and the Parish Council employing their own planning specialists. It was due to Audrey’s endless perseverance, hands on attention to the details and local knowledge, even down to producing newspaper cuttings, that confounded many ‘expert witnesses’ and solicitors. There was also the A58/A64 Group that finally removed heavy lorries from the A58. Any untoward happenings in the village were soon noted and investigated. Also a neighbourhood watch coordinator.
Audrey was a keen supporter of the Village Hall, Women’s Institute, unveiling the Parish Council Centenary Plaque at the Hall in 1994, and on Cyril’s passing presented a trophy to the Show Society. Audrey had been in a home for the past few years, and leaves Peter and Julie, and four Grandchildren.
A real Scarcroft stalwart and volunteer, very sadly missed.The Funeral was held at St Peters Church Thorner on
29^th February conducted bt the venerable John Oliver
